Peterborough Foodbank gets major funding boost
BGL donates £9,000 to city foodbank amid rising demand for emergency food parcels
BGL is giving £45,000 to local foodbanks as part of an ongoing campaign to help those hardest hit by coronavirus in our communities.
As demand for foodbanks is expected to rocket this winter, BGL is supporting five foodbanks – one near each of its offices – in Peterborough, Sunderland, Wakefield, London and Paris.
Research by the Trussell Trust predicts an additional 670,000 people will be destitute by the end of 2020, and unable to afford essentials like food and energy. Families with children have been the worst affected. This comes on top of year-on-year rises in the number of people unable to afford food and forced to use food banks across the UK.
Peterborough Foodbank will receive £9,000 towards its service costs. The foodbank operates Monday to Saturday, 11am-1pm, from one of three locations in Peterborough – Dogsthorpe Methodist Church, Holy Spirit Church, Bretton, or the Salvation Army in Bourges Boulevard.
Foodbank manager, Juliet Welch, said: “We are amazed and delighted at the very kind donation from BGL of £9,000 to help support the work of Peterborough Foodbank. We have seen a big increase in families being in need during the coronavirus pandemic and this donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide food parcels to ensure they do not go hungry.”
Claire Virge, CSR and sponsorship manager at BGL Group, said: “In 2020 no-one should be going hungry. Sadly, we know from speaking to charities that many people are facing exceptional hardship as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and are unable to afford the most basic essentials.
“BGL has committed £1.5 million in emergency funding to help those impacted by the pandemic but, in making this donation, we wanted to pay particular attention to those struggling to make ends meet. We recognise the vital role played by foodbanks in supporting people in poverty and want to help them meet the increasing need for their services.”
With over 10 million customers, BGL is a leading digital distributor of insurance and household financial services.
BGL has an office in Orton Southgate and a contact centre at Bretton, and is home to brands including comparethemarket.com, LesFurets.com, Beagle Street, Budget and Dial Direct.
