Here at BGL, we offer our colleagues the chance to support their favourite charity or cause through our Payroll Giving system. Here, Caroline Raines from our Group Communications team talks about how her donations have helped make a difference to the Matt Hampson Foundation.
The great thing about CSR at BGL is that you can get involved in the big ticket items such as the international project (I’ve been one of those lucky enough to visit a school we have funded in Zambia), as well as support causes which are important to you.
Closer to home, I’ve been able to support a charity I feel passionate about – the Matt Hampson Foundation – through regular payroll giving. This simple process takes a donation every month from my salary and gives it directly to the charity.
The Matt Hampson Foundation’s purpose is to inspire and support young people seriously injured through sport. The Foundation helps people to ‘get busy living’ again after life-altering injuries, by helping them get back into sport or just assisting in making adjustments to their new life.
I first got to know Matt and Tommy, the Foundation’s CEO, through some of BGL’s local cricket and rugby sponsorship deals. After our first meeting came some incredible coincidences which brought the valuable work of the Foundation much closer to home.
Seb Goold was just nine when he fell from a moving coach on his way back from a mini Rugby tournament in Norfolk. Seb, whose dad works with us here at BGL, suffered horrific and life-changing injuries which led to the amputation of his right leg at the thigh. Five years on and Seb is back at school with his twin brother, playing rugby, skiing and being a typical teenager! Then, another local boy, George Robinson, was seriously injured while playing rugby on a school tour in South Africa. BGL has supported both the Seb Goold Trust and Team George at different points, and both boys and their families have been helped by the Matt Hampson Foundation.
Seb and George are just two of the Foundation’s beneficiaries and there are many others, each of whom have a truly inspirational story of recovery, determination and courage: https://www.matthampsonfoundation.org/beneficiaries/
In 2018, the Foundation officially opened its Get Busy Living Centre, a purpose-built facility for the Foundation’s beneficiaries which enables them to rebuild their strength in the state-of-the-art gym, and meet other people, reducing the impact of the isolation such injuries can cause. The centre is also a source of support and camaraderie for the families of the beneficiaries.
I was lucky enough to be able to visit the centre several times during its construction, seeing for myself how, at every stage, every last detail of the build was created with beneficiaries in mind.
I’m proud to be a regular supporter of the Foundation and proud that BGL enables me to do this.
