Since March, the Learning and Talent Development team has been working hard to adapt and evolve the BGL Induction process for our new colleagues. Joining a new company during lockdown isn't the easiest but the team have worked hard to make sure that all our new colleagues are prepped and ready to go from day one.
Actually, the arrangement and delivery of tech starts weeks before day one, to ensure that on their first day with BGL, our new colleagues have the right equipment in place for a smooth and issue-free start.
First day in a new job
IT is the first department to get in touch and welcome each new person individually, they call each colleague to ensure that their equipment has arrived safely and is set up and working properly. The IT technicians make sure they have access to all the right servers, and are available to answer any questions they may have. Once they're set up and ready to go the rest of the day is spent with their line manager, introducing them to their new teams, giving them an overview of their role and their department and just generally making them feel welcome and supported.
Linda Shelton, Learning & Development Business Partner added; "I am especially impressed with how the line managers are engaging with the virtual ways of onboarding and ensuring they are connecting their new colleagues to their teams to make them feel welcome and supported".
Welcome to BGL – Week 1
Throughout the rest of the week there are several sessions scheduled where new colleagues get to meet each other for the first time 'virtually' on Teams, facilitated by the Learning & Development and wider HR team. They have a chance to meet with other new starters and generally feel like they're part of something bigger. It's also a great opportunity for them to discuss their new role and share where they've come from and what attracted them to BGL in the first place.
On day two they're introduced to our values and behaviours, supported by a range of digital resources, to help them to produce a set of short-term goals with their manager that are personal to them and their new role.
Our history, strategy and the benefits
On day three they get a full and insightful history about where the company started, what we've achieved together so far and more importantly where we're headed in the future. It's also a great opportunity to talk through the structure of the Group, the different business models and how the Group strategy underpins all of this.
In the afternoon, following a short animation, the Reward & Wellbeing team run a virtual Teams session taking our new starters through the range of great benefits on offer but also, more importantly the wellbeing support that is available to them; from Mental Health First Aiders through to financial planning and advice. Not forgetting the fun stuff, demonstrating what makes BGL a great place to work including, what is undoubtedly the highlight of many colleagues time at BGL, the BGL Awards Ball.
CSR Induction Day
What would have a been a very hands-on CSR introduction, prior to lockdown, has been adapted to a 'virtual' session with Emily Taylor, our CSR Manager. As well as giving an overview of our CSR programme and everything we have done to support good causes in the past. Emily covers all of our future plans including our recent Empower, Pledge, Donate campaign, our Regional Charity Partners, the Built It International Zambia project and of course the local opportunities we have on the Helping Hands Notice Board.
So, what's next?
The L&D team is constantly reviewing the feedback they receive from new colleagues about their whole onboarding experience. It's a great temperature check to see if what they're delivering is really effective and where they can improve.
Do our new starters feel welcome? Well, here's what they had to say about their induction experience so far…
