Jamie Murray started his career with BGL back in 1998 selling car insurance at our very first contact centre in Bretton, Peterborough. He’s seen the business grow and evolve over the last 25 years, and whilst he left for a few years to further his career elsewhere, Jamie came back to BGL in 2015 as Associate Commercial Director for Beagle Street – our online life insurance provider.
We took some time out with Jamie to find out what attracted him to BGL… twice… and to understand why this is such an exciting time for Beagle Street – the newest brand for BGL Group.
What originally attracted you to BGL?
I actually joined the group back in 98 as a Car Insurance Representative, selling and servicing car Insurance sales over the phone at our contact centre in Bretton, Peterborough. Just before I left in 2004, I spent a year working in Cape Town helping to set up a new contact centre for the Group. I then came back 10 years later! – Why did I come back? – BGL really looks after its people, it has values that resonate with me, plenty of opportunity to progress and develop, and above all it’s fun and exciting to work here.
Why did you leave us - where did you go in 2004?
I left in 2004 to help set up a Life Insurance company. When I joined there were four of us and when I left, we had grown the company to over 100 people. More recently, just before returning to BGL, I was Head of Learning Operations for one of the UK’s biggest Home Emergency services.
What is your role now at BGL?
I returned to BGL in November 2015 as Associate Commercial Director for Beagle Street and I love it. It’s a relatively new business for BGL Group and it’s currently in a really exciting growth phase which just presents us with so many opportunities for development.
I oversee four main areas, one being our contact centre, namely Customer Operations, another being our Customer Love agenda which has a key focus on customer satisfaction and how we can improve our customer experience. This is really important to us – we are focussed on delivering a first class experience for our customers. The other areas are two of our distribution channels - the direct comparison tool channel (DCT) which is overseeing relationships with price comparison websites and more recently our Intermediary distribution channel, although not widely established yet.
Why is this an exciting time for Beagle Street?
We’ve seen record growth since the birth of our new direct TV campaign back at the start of the year, and this will only continue to grow. We also announced a new life insurance partnership with Virgin Money which means we have a far wider reach of distribution. We’ve done so much to simplify and modernise the process of buying life insurance over the past few years, through our innovative online product, we can help Virgin Money Customers bridge the protection gap with the minimum of stress, supporting them to protect what’s most important to them. It’s a really exciting partnership which will see customer operations expand and our Customer love agenda become integral to our success.
What impact do you think this kind of partnership will have on Beagle Street?
Virgin Money will be a gateway to other businesses wanting to partner with us. By working in partnership, the creativity and propositions reach another level – as they say – two heads are better than one. The challenge will be to keep the momentum and continue to provide simple, stress free life insurance for our customers.
How have you seen Beagle Street grow since your time with the business?
When I joined Beagle Street our Customer Operations team had 17 employees. We’ve now doubled that over the last year and, with the new Virgin Money partnership, we are looking to increase this further. Shameless plug – if you know anyone who is passionate about customer service and is looking for a great place to work in Peterborough, then give us a shout.
What are the people like in Beagle Street?
We have so many different personalities across many different disciplines – from Marketing, to tech leads, developers, UX designers, SEO experts, finance – all of our team are caring, understanding, hardworking and, more importantly, passionate about what they do. We all help each other out and come up with some great ideas to improve the business. It really is a #greatplacetowork.
