Hear from Jess Paddon, who tells us about her journey so far on the Technology Business Analyst graduate programme
I studied IT and Business Studies at university, as it was the perfect blend of the two areas I loved without being too techy or too business focused. Prior to joining BGL’s Tech graduate scheme, I worked in a few Business Analyst roles and came out of those wanting to explore more of this career path and see where it would take me.
I initially came upon the BGL graduate programme through a message on LinkedIn from a member of the graduate recruitment team. Upon researching more into the role, I realised it was something that really interested me, as it helped build upon areas I had learnt during prior roles and during university. As well as this, the role would give me the opportunity to uncover even more areas of interest and put all this work into practice, from classroom learning as part of my BA Diploma I’m currently undertaking.
I’ve been at BGL for over a year now, having started in the Business Technology area within our Insurance, Distribution and Outsourcing division, and currently in Data Engineering at comparethemarket.com. Parts of my role have included eliciting requirements from key stakeholders and translating these into user stories for our developers and testers to work on, working alongside Quality Engineers to create test documentation for our end-to-end journeys to ensure we have met requirements for our team, as well as facilitating various agile ceremonies and meetings with key people across the business.
The role of the BA is so varied, so every day is different and you’re able to work on a variety of different initiatives and have involvement with different teams. There’s always something going on, whether that be conferences (virtually now), BA meetups or group-wide initiatives. As a BA graduate, you’re given responsibility to lead on projects, which gives you the opportunity to work on a project from inception to delivery, learn along the way and have fun doing it!
