To give you some insight into life as a Senior Manager in BGL’s Finance Risk team, Joel Tate gives us a glimpse of what a typical day in his life is like. Over to you, Joel..
My day has a lot of variety, where no two are the same. That said, there are also regular cycles of work throughout both the quarter and the year to get done. I get in quite early, and after my morning tea, I catch up with my team to understand their key priorities. This ensures that I can set aside appropriate time in the day to support them, before my time is divided by meetings, reporting reviews and addressing requests or issues from the business.
As a Senior Manager in the Finance Risk team at BGL, my role is to provide reassurances to the Board and the senior finance management team that risks are being effectively managed. This involves considering the different activities carried out by the team, assessing their impact and offering operational improvements. I sit on the boundary between the Finance and Risk teams, so understanding and being able to communicate to both areas is needed to achieve great results.
I really enjoy the challenge and making a difference at BGL, examples of this include helping support the development of new finance controls for comparethemarket.com, writing insight reports for senior management or attending multi-disciplined projects on behalf of the Finance team.
To be an effective team player in Finance Risk, you need to have a great understanding of risk management and controls, especially in the finance sector. Being able to understand and communicate complex ideas in a simple manner is essential, as it can get very technical at times. Great stakeholder management is another key component of the role, as you engage with people of all levels across the business.
I started at BGL about nine years ago, originally from a Big Four audit firm. I was looking for a friendly company that had great potential, and I have not been disappointed in that regard. I was poached by our Group Treasury team soon after joining BGL, where I qualified as a Corporate Treasurer. After about three years in Treasury, I had the opportunity to go over to Paris to cover a Financial Controller position on secondment. On returning to the UK, I applied for my current position, which I’ve held for almost four years.
I am a keen believer in ensuring as much breadth and opportunity in a role as possible. This has led me to be my department’s People Champion and Data Security Guardian. I’m also a member of our social team, part of the Finance People Strategy group, and I also get involved in our annual Finance Graduate programme.
Aside from the enormous number of opportunities there are throughout the Group, BGL is very supportive in investing in personal development. The company has a wealth of people who genuinely want to help drive the business in a positive direction. Also, Corporate Social Responsibility is high on the agenda when you work for BGL - we’re actively encouraged to spend time helping charities, such as Little Miracles, and giving back to the local community. For me, that’s what makes BGL such a great place to work!
