Landing on new shores... my experience of joining BGL as a Senior Business Analyst
After ten years working as a Business Analyst (BA), Julie Petre felt there wasn't much left to discover. Then she found BGL. Here, she talks about how life at BGL changed her perception.
When I joined the Business Technology team in May last year, I thought it was going to be a fairly easy and straight-forward move. I had a decades’ worth of skills and experience under my belt – there wasn’t much left to challenge me as a Business Analyst, right?
How wrong I was I?! What I couldn’t have anticipated – and was pleasantly surprised to find – is just how much more I had to learn”
So what makes BGL different?
The people at BGL are passionate with a desire for challenge and innovation. Some of my colleagues have been with BGL for many years, and my key stakeholders span across a range of roles, meaning the depth of knowledge across our business and our customers is fantastic. This doesn’t mean that we’re stuck in historic ways of working though – in fact, it’s quite the opposite. As a team, we’re always encouraged to explore new approaches and techniques that will enable us to build the best solutions for our customers. It’s enthusiasm and support that’s hard to put in a job description, but one that makes a real difference to how effectively you do your job.
Belonging to a BA community
I would describe the ethos embedded amongst the BA community as ‘excellence through craftsmanship’. I’ve joined a community of BA’s who are committed to how we evolve the way we work – including how we develop and implement frameworks on a daily basis, how we embed new agile working practises, and how we shift towards more collaborative working. It’s also really exciting to be able to build our network externally, with us often attending BA community meet-ups in Milton Keynes, Peterborough and other locations.
Continuous Improvement through training and personal development
Training is considered more than just a tick box exercise at BGL, with personal development being built into our roles and an expectation that we will commit to improving ourselves. We have an excellent Development team and a fantastic range of diverse training materials at our fingertips. External training such as BCS Business Analysis examinations and professional training pathways are also available to facilitate the move from practitioner to expert – and who would not want to work in an environment that’s so supportive? We also utilise our external contacts within wider BA communities, which helps to keep our specific skills set relevant and ahead of the game.
Keeping abreast of new technologies and business ventures
BGL is keen to transform the way we use data, to future-proof our platforms as the business expands into new ventures. As a BA, this means that there’s often opportunities to move around the business, working with different teams and projects – from small scale change to new propositions – which keeps things really interesting.
Would I recommend BGL to other Business Analysts?
Yes – absolutely! Whether you’re new or experienced in the Business Analysis field, you’ll be joining a community of committed professionals who work hard to drive change.
