Through our Spotlight Series, we delve into the minds of our colleagues to find out more about their roles, what motivates them, who inspires them and much more.
What originally attracted you to BGL Group?
Several colleagues of mine had left my previous employer to join BGL over a few years, and they recommended the Group as a good place to work. What was particularly appealing was the great things they had to say about the culture, which was important to me when looking for my next role.
Tell us about your journey through BGL since you joined the Group
I joined the Group Risk Advisory team in August 2017, specifically to help embed the Risk Management Framework - working with BGL businesses to identify key processes, the associated risks and controls and to design and document tools and guidance which are aligned with industry best practices for risk management.
Tell us about your role
My role in Group Risk Advisory is to provide support and guidance on risk related matters. This varies from guidance on how to apply the risk framework, to providing advice and guidance on projects undertaken by the Group to ensure that we fully understand the opportunities and threats before and post implementation.
Tell us something not many people know about you
I was invited to and attended the Queen’s Garden Party in June 2015 in recognition of my charitable work with the Blind Veterans UK charity, which was an absolute honour.
Highlights and lowlights of 2020
From a work perspective the highlight of 2020 was supporting the business with the identification and management of the operational risks associated with coronavirus and working with BGL businesses to create a safe working environment for our colleagues to be able to return to the office. This involved a review of the government guidelines against the adjustments being made in BGL, collaborating with key stakeholders across the business and providing recommendations to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our colleagues, always.
Outside of work, the highlight was how communities and individuals rallied together to support our key workers and the vulnerable. It demonstrated that when needs must, the people of the UK get stuck in and draw strength from the fact that we are all in it together, and only together can we get through it.
The lowlight of 2020 for me was, and still is, the loss of personal contact - not being able to meet up with loved ones, friends and colleagues and to just be able to give them a hug to let them know you are there for them.
You’ve worked in risk for a number of years, what advice would you give to someone starting their career in this area?
My advice for those starting out in risk is to get out and about, establish positive working relationships and trust with your colleagues as those connections will serve you well in the future, especially if you need information from them. Be curious - do not be afraid to dig deeper and have a keen eye for detail to back up your opinions when you know something is wrong and need to challenge a view or decision.
What do you enjoy most about working at BGL?
The fast-paced environment in BGL makes the role really exciting and brings lots of variety to the work that I do. My days are never the same and this is underpinned by the desire of everyone who works at BGL to collaborate with each other, to make sure that we are working towards the same vision in delivering great products and an outstanding service to our customers way ahead of our competitors.
And finally, what are you looking forward to in the future at BGL?
I am looking forward to progressing my career within the Group by seizing the opportunities to move into different roles so that I can learn something completely new which also utilises my risk skills.
