We've worked in partnership with Build It International for a number of years, creating opportunities for young people and their communities in Zambia through skills training, work experience and essential community building projects. Despite the current circumstances, this hasn't stopped progress being made...
During the local lockdowns, the Build It International construction team worked tirelessly to ensure the new classrooms were built and fully functional ready for the students who returned in early June, for pupils sitting exams only. A full school of 710 pupils is expected to open fully in early September. Build It International has been working with the staff there to help and support the school with preparations to keep the staff and pupils safe.
With the £50,000 we pledged to Build It International in April, they will be installing 40 permanent hand-washing stations in schools across Zambia. Two of the 40 hand-washing stations will be at Nalyuanda school, which allows 18 children at a time to wash their hands. Currently they are using buckets which need to be filled with water several times a day. The new hand washing stations will be a big development for the school. Built It International will also be providing a package to support the school in its preparations to keep the children safe which includes:
- Average of one washable face mask per pupil and per teacher
- Hand soap and sanitisers to supplement existing supply (in some cases this is non-existent)
- At least one no-contact thermometer
- Child-friendly COVID-19 health awareness posters
- COVID-19 child-friendly health awareness sessions
