Graham Fearn has been part of the BGL Tech team since December 2015. In that time, he’s seen the department go through considerable change, especially around the implementation of Agile. In our latest blog, Graham tells us what a typical working day looks like as a .Net Software Engineer.
My day normally starts with a podcast on my way to work. One that’s stood out to me recently is AFH 105: Agile Leadership and Management with Dave Dame
by Agile for Humans
, which shares Dave’s inspirational story as an Agile management coach with cerebral palsy, working for large software and IT companies in Canada. As well as sharing some great insight on Agile, some of the key takeaways I took from the podcast were the value in learning from your peers; and the importance of effective time management skills.
So what does my typical working day look like at BGL Tech? Well, we never stand still, so there’s always new and innovative projects for us to get involved in. Collaboration is key, so my job involves working with a number of different stakeholders across the business. On this particular day, I met with my .Net colleagues across the departments to discuss the technical requirements of adding a new brand to our partner’s sales and service website platforms. We’d need to consider things such as ID ranges, affinity/mask codes, the source control branching and merging strategy, the input we’d need from our Business Analysts, new sub-domains that would need creating and which servers would be used to host the different environments we have – to name a few!
This is a typical day for me – working on stories and tasks within my Agile delivery team, looking at the technical roadmap for the customer-facing sales and service websites, and developing effective internal tools that will help us to accelerate, grow and evolve. The BGL Tech team is made up of some great people, and my day also consists of supporting my .Net colleagues, and training and mentoring the apprentices and graduates. I also have line management responsibility so my afternoon's can often consist of 1-2-1's with my direct reports.
It’s an exciting time to be at BGL Tech, as we’ve recently opened a brand new tech hub in Sunderland. I am actively involved in the recruitment of .Net Software Engineers which keeps me busy! Interested? Click here to apply.
