What is the challenge? 

As a Senior Engineering Manager for Compare the Market, you will help define the product vision and architecture for our software engineering teams as well as having a key role in overseeing delivery and operations. Your subject matter expertise in mobile engineering will help shape and support technical discussions on code quality through to testing strategy and software architecture ensuring best engineering practices are followed all the time. 

On top of that, you will guide, mentor and coach a delivery team of Engineering Managers, Principal & Lead Engineers to drive technical initiatives that improve our engineering practices, work with Technical Product Owners & Product Managers to drive technical elements of road map and direction and partner with other key stakeholders within CtM Tech. You will translate the vision into clear deliverables, providing clarity & focus. You will help define the strategy and architecture which will scale to meet our future business strategy.

What will it take to be successful as a Senior Engineering Manager? 

As an experienced Senior Engineering Manager, you will function as both a people manager and an effective facilitator and collaborator of technical decision making and should be able to demonstrate some of the key responsibilities & skills below: 

  • A highly skilled technical leader, who guides complex/high impact decisions across approaches to engineering, testing, architecture, technology choices, releases, deployment and operations in a customer-focused organisation. 

  • Passionate about building teams. Empathetic and supportive management style, empowering your teams to develop be autonomous and solve customer's needs. 

  • With Product owners/managers, own and deliver the roadmap for a large or complex collection of products and have a significant influence on their strategy. 

  • Collaborate well with product stakeholders to proactively identify challenges and mitigate them. 

  • Be a collaborative and influential part of the Engineering Management community, promoting best practises and standards that have a positive impact on how we develop software. 

  • Create and drive initiatives relating to developing world class engineering talent and aiding engineer and manager mobility across the business. 

  • Active engagement in technical discussions during architecture meetings, code reviews, and design sessions promoting a culture of learning and continuous improvement. 

  • Develops a strong culture of Build, Run, Own ensuring the teams collectively own codebases and understand choices 

  • Supporting the continuous delivery of working software to production services by working to construct roadmaps appropriately, identify suitable releases, create appropriate definitions of done and ready for the team and helping manage dependencies 

Essential Skills: 

  • Strong technical background in software engineering 

  • Strong analytical, negotiation and organisational skills 

  • Strong stakeholder management across organisational boundaries 

  • Experience owning many critical production services, sometimes across multiple engineering teams 

  • Strong experience managing, recruiting, and developing engineering teams 

  • Actively shares knowledge with others and builds communities 

Desirable Skills: 

  • A creative problem-solver with experience of working in an Agile environment 

  • Ability to actively contribute to and influence technical discussions with engineers and engineering managers 

  • Experience advocating inner/open sourcing in an organisation
