What is the challenge? 

As an Engineering Manager for Compare the Market, you will lead an engineering team responsible for compare the market mobile applications. Your technical expertise will help shape what engineering excellence looks like, driving initiatives that improve our engineering practices, within the domain and across Compare the Market.   

Working closely with the domain lead and other team members, you will be integral to defining the vision and high-level roadmap for the mobile app teams, translating our technical and customer vision into clear deliverables.  

At Compare the Market we have over 190 technologists and use plethora of development languages, tools and platforms, including iOS, RxSwift, Android, Kotlin, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Kafka, Java, Scala, Python, .NET Core, Node.js, MongoDB and more. 

What will it take to be successful as an Engineering Manager? 

As an experienced Engineering Manager, you will function as both a people manager and an effective facilitator and collaborator of technical decision making and should be able to demonstrate some of the key responsibilities & skills below: 

  • A technical leader, who guides decisions across approaches to software engineering, testing, architecture, technology choices, releases, deployment and operations in a customer-focused organisation. 

  • Passionate about building teams. Collaborative, empathetic and supportive management style, empowering your team to develop be autonomous and solve customer's needs. 

  • Able to work technical and non-technical product managers and other stakeholders, to own and build a complex collection of products that have a significant influence on their strategy. 

  • Collaborate well with product stakeholders to proactively identify challenges and mitigate them. 

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in agile working, ensuring and guiding effective collaboration in the team and continuous improvement in working practices 

  • Support sessions on estimation, story refinement, ensuring that acceptance criteria are well defined and that the backlog is suitable for the technical team 

  • Participate and drive initiatives relating to people management including recruiting, onboarding, performance reviews, career advancement, training, etc. 

  • Drive technical initiatives to build clean, robust, maintainable, and performant systems. 

  • Active engagement in technical discussions during architecture meetings, code reviews, and design sessions promoting a culture of learning and continuous improvement. 

  • Develops a strong culture of Build, Run, Own ensuring the team collectively own codebases and understand choices 

  • Supporting the continuous delivery of working software to production services by working to construct roadmaps appropriately, identify suitable releases, create appropriate definitions of done and ready for the team and helping manage dependencies. 

Essential Skills: 

  • Strong technical background in mobile engineering 

  • Analytical, negotiation and organisational skills 

  • Experience owning and continuously improving production services 

  • Actively shares knowledge and participates in communities 

  • Gives and seeks feedback regularly 

  • Managing, recruiting, and developing engineering teams 

  • Technical acumen able to justify technology choices to technical and non-technical audiences 

Desirable Skills: 

  • A creative problem-solver with experience of working in an Agile environment 

  • Ability to actively contribute to and influence technical discussions with engineers 

  • Experience advocating inner/open sourcing in an organisation
