What is the challenge? 

As an Engineering Manager for Compare the Market, you will help define the product vision and architecture for our technical services teams as well as having a key role in overseeing delivery and operations. Your subject matter expertise in microservices will help shape and support technical discussions on code quality through to testing strategy and software architecture ensuring best engineering practices are followed all the time. 

On top of that, you will guide, mentor and coach a delivery team of Engineers to drive technical initiatives that improve our engineering practices, work with Technical Product Managers to drive technical elements of road map and direction and partner with other key stakeholders within CtM Tech. You will translate the vision into clear deliverables, providing clarity & focus. You will help define the strategy and architecture which will scale to meet our future business strategy.

What will it take to be successful as an Engineering Manager? 

As an experienced Engineering Manager, you will function as both a people manager and an effective facilitator and collaborator of technical decision making and should be able to demonstrate some of the key responsibilities & skills below: 

  • A technical leader, who guides decisions across approaches to software engineering, testing, architecture, technology choices, releases, deployment and operations in a customer-focused organisation. 

  • Passionate about building teams. Collaborative, empathetic and supportive management style, empowering your team to develop be autonomous and solve customers needs. 

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in agile working, ensuring and guiding effective collaboration in the team and continuous improvement in working practices 

  • Support sessions on estimation, story refinement, ensuring that acceptance criteria are well defined and that the backlog is suitable for the technical team 

  • Participate and drive initiatives relating to people management including recruiting, onboarding, performance reviews, career advancement, training, etc. 

  • Drive technical initiatives to build clean, robust, maintainable, and performant systems. 

  • Active engagement in technical discussions during architecture meetings, code reviews, and design sessions promoting a culture of learning and continuous improvement. 

  • Develops a strong culture of Build, Run, Own ensuring the team collectively own codebases and understand choices 

  • Supporting the continuous delivery of working software to production services by working to construct roadmaps appropriately, identify suitable releases, create appropriate definitions of done and ready for the team and helping manage dependencies. 

Essential Skills: 

  • Strong technical background in microservices 

  • Analytical, negotiation and organisational skills 

  • Experience owning and continuously improving production services 

  • Actively shares knowledge and participates in communities 

  • Gives and seeks feedback regularly 

  • Managing, recruiting, and developing engineering teams 

  • Technical acumen able to justify technology choices to technical and non-technical audiences 

Desirable Skills: 

  • A creative problem-solver with experience of working in an Agile environment 

  • Ability to actively contribute to and influence technical discussions with engineers 

  • Experience advocating inner/open sourcing in an organisation
