What is the challenge? 

As the Engineering Lead for Cloud Platforms at Compare the Market, you will help set the technology direction for multiple engineering teams ensuring goals are clear and they have the necessary skills/tools to deliver high standard solutions consumed by our entire software engineering organisation, as well as having a key role in overseeing delivery and operations. Your subject matter expertise on cloud platform technologies will ensure appropriate capability exists to deliver roadmaps with speed and predictability, whilst maintaining a four 9’s level of availability, meet regulatory requirements, company policies/standards and ensure appropriate practices are defined and adhered to by their teams. 

On top of that, you will guide, mentor and coach a team of Engineering Managers to drive technical initiatives that improve our engineering practices, Technical Product Managers to drive road map and direction of cloud platform products and partner with Principal & Lead Engineers and other key stakeholders within CtM Tech. You will translate the vision into clear deliverables, providing clarity & focus. You will help define the strategy and architecture of data solutions which will scale to meet our future business strategy.

What will it take to be successful as an Engineering Lead? 

As an experienced Engineering Lead, you will function as both a people manager and technical-thought captain and should be able to demonstrate some of the key responsibilities below: 

  • Direct a variety of engineering roles in a customer-focused organisation 

  • Defines the overall tech direction and translates into an Engineering strategy, standards and roadmap 

  • Driving the ongoing performance of the Tech function 

  • Managing the overall capacity of the area, ensuring demand & supply balance & differences are positively negotiated and resolved 

  • Recruiting and developing high performing engaged teams 

  • Adherence to tech principles: achievement of Immune System standards, oversight of risks and the continued delivery of initiatives to meet agreed goals 

  • Overall accountability for multiple diverse teams, stakeholder management and full life-cycle of multiple services (Build, Run and Own) 

  • Unite the teams to be focused on great outcomes, in an environment that promotes mastery, autonomy and accountability 

  • Ensures their teams understand and remain compliant with Regulatory requirements and company policies/standards  

  • Seeks to remove friction from SDLC processes 

  • Create an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement and allow appropriate levels of autonomy. 

Essential Skills: 

  • Strong technical background in cloud platforms including infrastructure, security, observability, tooling solutions for software engineers, storage & messaging. 

  • Strong analytical, negotiation, organisational & commercial skills 

  • Strong team builder with superb communication & influencing skills 

  • Strong stakeholder management across organisational boundaries 

  • Experience owning many critical production services across multiple engineering teams in a regulated environment 

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and highly versatile 

  • Experience building engineering and leadership talent pipelines 

Desirable Skills: 

  • A creative problem-solver with experience of working in an Agile environment    

  • Ability to actively contribute to and influence technical discussions with engineers, engineering managers and product managers 

  • Experience advocating inner/open sourcing in an organisation
