What’s the challenge?
As an Engineering Community of Practice Lead (CPL) within Product Engineering at comparethemarket.com (CtM) you will bring community, voice and consistency to a distributed engineering team.
Community - We want to consciously create and nurture a community of practice for engineers that develops the capability of our engineers within CtM. The community will exist, not only as an exchange of knowledge and a conduit to build out the knowledge in engineering and engineering best practice across CtM, but also to bring coherence to an engineering team that works in a distributed, loosely coupled (and sometimes geographically remote) manner. The Community of Practice Lead will also be responsible for driving community participation, and where necessary creating the space for participation.
Voice - We will be creating a developer experience within CtM that’s second to none within engineering circles. In order to achieve this, the CPL will ensure that the voice of engineering is heard and that the engineering team has access to the tools, platforms and developer experience needed to get work done in the safest and most friction free way possible, working with other stakeholders to inform roadmaps, purchasing decisions and challenging others to provide solutions that don’t burden the individual engineer.
Consistency - As a group of engineers, we don’t all have the same experiences or expertises, each individual will have different gaps in their knowledge or skill set, things that they are good at and things there are great at. The CPL will identify emerging industry best practice and technologies and understand how they can add value to our Software Development Lifecycle and DevEx, be able to identify capability gaps and address the variability of experience across product engineering. The CPL will also be responsible for creating the baseline for engineering learning within CtM, defining what CtM looks for in engineering hires. As an experienced senior technologist, you will be able to demonstrate significant involvement in change within a technology organisation, change that influenced the way that engineers got their work done, and the way in which engineering was represented within that organisation.
