Skills training in Zambia
Working in partnership with Build It International
, BGL continues to support construction trainees in Zambia through skills training, work experience, and essential community build projects. The trainees develop skills in bricklaying, concrete work, and plastering, learning onsite from experienced instructors. At the end of their training, most earn a nationally recognised building certificate. Each trainee continues to receive post-training support, helping them to find a job, earn a living, develop a career and provide for their families.
A recent graduate from the scheme was Needah who, along with her twin sister Emelda, were the first twin trainees for Build it International. They joined the training programme at the Linda Community School project back in 2016.
Their dad died when they were young and, as the only family member earning money at the time, losing him put the family under considerable financial strain. Despite financial hardship, Needah completed her secondary education in 2014 but the cost of further education was too much for the family to afford and she found herself unable to find work.
Needah said: "I wanted to do nursing but now my focus has changed. Since joining Build It's training programme I have gained an interest in bricklaying. I think, even after this, I will use my new skills to raise the funds I need to rewrite my grade 12 GCE exams. After this, I can upgrade my studies so I can go further in my new career as a builder. I would like to thank those who are supporting us, BGL and Build It International because it is not easy for someone like me to find this sort of opportunity.”
