Supporting good causes

We have dedicated Community Teams at our offices in Peterborough, Sunderland, Wakefield, London and Paris. Meeting monthly, the Community Teams encourage, support and review applications for funding and volunteering, allocating BGL resource to worthy causes while establishing relationships with local charities.

Applications are often made either through our people or directly from people working for charities in our communities. We encourage people to complete fundraising of their own before approaching BGL for funds.

The BGL Make a Difference Fund

As part of our Community programme we have launched the BGL Make a Difference Fund, an additional £160,000 funding pot to be distributed between our five key sites in Sunderland, Wakefield, Peterborough, London and Paris. All five sites will select a partner charity to support with Make a Difference funding and volunteering for a key project or initiative to be delivered over the next two years.

Exec Challenge

Fifty colleagues joined our Group Executive Committee to take on part of Dorset’s stunning Jurassic Coast in our Exec Challenge.

Together they tackled a 30-mile stretch of coastline over two days, passing through heathland, farmland, forest areas and hard terrain, along the way raising an amazing £45,000.

The Gift of Giving

Last Christmas, BGL gave every colleague £10 to donate to one of our regional charity partners. In total, almost £15,000 was donated to good causes.

We also had Giving Trees at each of our sites and encouraged colleagues to donate items which would make a difference to our local communties. Over 950 people received these donations in time for Christmas, thanks to the generosity of our colleagues.

We also worked with Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), our environment partner, to offset the carbon footprint of our 3,000 colleagues over the festive season. As a step in our journey towards Investors in the Environment (iiE) Bronze accreditation, we offsett 17.9 tonnes of C02e (equating to 3,000 colleagues' worth of cards and wrapping paper) by planting trees in the Peterborough Forest.

The Gift of Giving

Last Christmas, BGL gave every colleague £10 to donate to either our international charity partner, Build It International, or one of our regional charity partners. To mark BGL's 25th anniversay, 25 colleagues were also given £100 to donate to any charity of their choice. In total, almost £27,000 was donated to good causes last Christmas.

We also had Giving Trees at each site and encouraged colleagues to bring gifts to put under the tree that were passed onto older people and young carers across the country via Age UK and the young carers charities local to our UK sites. Almost 500 people had a better Christmas thanks to their generosity.
