Fusion Sunderland helps local children act on their 'right to read'
Immediate release: 25 August 2010
Fusion Sunderland has further enhanced its role within the local community as part of the Prince of Wales' 'Right to Read' programme, which supports young children in their literacy development. The programme increases a child's willingness to read, enhances their confidence and improves comprehension.
Six volunteers joined the scheme this year to read with children on a weekly basis for one term. They were allocated three schools in a catchment area that experiences challenges associated with deprivation.
Mark Brannen, Contact Centre Manager, Sunderland said: "We're very committed to our local community and are always seeking ways that Fusion can make a difference. For the employee volunteers involved in the 'Right to Read' programme, this was a chance to make a difference in a child's life, while gaining an insight about themselves along the way."
Natalie Cox, Retentions Advisor, was one of the reading volunteers. She said, "The children I've been lucky enough to work with are lovely. Both are from very troubled backgrounds and when I met them, they had little opportunity to read at home. It's been great to see them grow in confidence over the time we've been together. Now hearing them able to read aloud fills me with pride!"
Fusion became involved with Right to Read as part of its ongoing relationship with the Business in the Community 'Cares' programme. For more information about 'Right to Read', visit www.bitc.org.uk
