Sensory play area for Flag Fen
Immediate release: 10 February 2012
Major local employer, the BGL Group, has donated £6,900 to Peterborough's local archaeological site, Flag Fen. The funds will be used to create a new sensory play area to enhance the experience of young visitors to the historical site.
The sensory play area will allow young visitors to have hands-on experience of what it would be like on an archaeological dig - using real tools to dig and search for buried artefacts. The sensory play area forms part of a recent facelift for Flag Fen, since it came under the management of Vivacity, Peterborough's Culture and Leisure Trust, in 2011. The site has also undergone a refurbishment of its visitor centre and museum, and there are also plans for a revised coffee shop, plus restoration to some of the parkland.
Sarah Stannage from Vivacity Heritage said: "The donation from the BGL Group exceeded our expectations and will enable us to create an area that will engage, encourage and stimulate learning through the senses whilst providing an enjoyable place for children to play. We are looking forward to the completion of the play area, which should help us to attract many more families and young people to visit this fascinating and important heritage site for Peterborough."
BGL Group Chief Executive, Peter Winslow, added: "At the BGL Group we feel it is important to provide help and support to organisations, like Vivacity, who are striving to improve, promote and preserve Peterborough's cultural heritage. As a local employer, we are dedicated to supporting local worthwhile causes such as Flag Fen and are well on our way to achieving our target to donate one million pounds by June 2012."
