BGL Group rises more than 50 places in Britain's 250 Largest Mid-Market Private Companies
Immediate release: 24 October 2008
The BGL Group is one of the largest mid-market private companies in Britain, according to the latest Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 250 league table published at the weekend.
The annual table, now in its fourth year, ranks Britain's 250 mid-market companies by latest sales based on their latest available audited accounts - in our case this covers the 2006/07 financial year.
Peterborough-based BGL Group, one of Britain's leading insurance brokers with in excess of 2.3 million customers, was rated number 175th on the list, up 54 places from last year, and higher up the table than Manchester United Football Club, McLaren racing cars and Harvey Nichols department stores.
The BGL Group currently employs almost 2,300 people. It operates major contact centre operations (Fusion) in Peterborough, Coventry, Sunderland, Peterlee in the UK, and Cape Town, South Africa.
The Group's affinity business, Junction, has numerous successful partnerships with companies including the Post Office®, M&S Money, Auto Trader, Bradford and Bingley and most recently HSBC. Other BGL Group businesses and brands include the price comparison website comparethemarket.com, Bennetts, the number one bike insurer, and the new carbon-neutral motor insurance ibuyeco.
Established in 1992 as an insurer, the Peterborough-based group changed strategy in 1997 to become an intermediary. Sales were £212 million in 2007.
Peter Winslow, Group Chief Executive Officer, said: "We are thrilled to have gained recognition in the Top Track 250 which is a hugely influential business league table, for the second year running. We have always been a successful business but the last few years have been phenomenal. The last year has been challenging in many ways both for the BGL Group and the business world at large. But I am pleased to say the Group continues to rise to that challenge, and the fact that we have risen more than 50 places higher up the league table is testament to that. The basis of our success is down to our culture and our people who are both innovative and entrepreneurial."
The 250 companies on the 2008 list generated combined sales of £69billion and employed more than 477,000 staff representing approximately five per cent of GDP and 1.5 per cent of the UK workforce.
