BGL Group rises 78 places in Britain's 250 Largest Mid-Market Private Companies
Immediate release: 12 October 2009
The BGL Group is one of the largest mid-market private companies in Britain, according to the latest Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 250 league table published at the weekend.
The annual table, now in its fifth year, ranks Britain's 250 mid-market companies by sales based on their latest available audited accounts – in BGL's case, the 2007/08 financial year.
Peterborough-based BGL Group, one of Britain's leading insurance brokers with in excess of 2.3 million customers, was rated 97th on the list, up 78 places from last year, and higher up the table than Center Parcs, Manchester United Football Club, the McLaren racing team and Harvey Nichols department stores.
The BGL Group currently employs almost 2,200 people. It operates major contact centre operations (Fusion) in Peterborough, Coventry, Sunderland, Peterlee in the UK, and Cape Town, South Africa.
The Group's affinity business, Junction, has numerous successful partnerships with companies including the Post Office®, M&S Money, Auto Trader, HSBC and RAC. Other BGL Group businesses and brands include the price comparison website comparethemarket.com, Bennetts, the number one bike insurer, and green motor insurance brand ibuyeco.
Established in 1992 as an insurer, the Peterborough-based group changed strategy in 1997 to become an intermediary. Sales were £279 million in 2008.
A spokesperson for the Group said: "The Top Track 250 is a hugely influential business league table, and we are proud to have risen up the list for the third year running. We have always been a successful business but the last few years have been phenomenal. Recent months have been challenging in many ways both for the BGL Group and the business world at large. But the Group has risen to the challenge, and our continued progression up the league table is testament to that. Our success is down the company's unique culture of innovation and versatility."
This year's Top Track 250 companies generated combined sales of £68 billion, and employed more than 500,000 staff – equivalent to roughly 5% of GDP and 1.5% of the UK workforce. However, there are still some signs of strain on the table, with more than half the companies reporting a decrease in their operating profit margin.
The league table features household names such as Harrods, Flybe, Odeon Group and Warburtons.
