Major IT employer sponsors college award
Immediate release: 01 July 2009
The IT Department at BGL Group – one of the region's major employers - sponsored the Outstanding Achievement Award at Peterborough Regional College's Excellence in Skills Awards 2009 – awarded to Ashley Gutteridge.
Ashley (26), of Fletton, Peterborough, was unable to make the awards ceremony so instead was invited along to the group's IT Headquarters at Park House, Lynch Wood, to be presented with £150 in vouchers from Richard Rickwood, Associate Director for IT Applications and Development.
The awards celebrate students' achievements during the academic year 2008/09 and featured celebrity guest speaker David Grant. David is a vocal coach who has worked with the likes of Will Young and Take That, and has, together with his wife Carrie, been a professional judge on shows such as Fame Academy and Pop Idol. David has presented various awards at the Education and Learning Awards and is an Ambassador for UK Skills.
Ashley is a mature student and over the last two years has juggled a full-time job at Tesco with studying for his Level Two BTEC Information and Communication Technology and then the Level Three Access Course in Computing with Business. He will start a three-year degree course later this year in Computing through the University Centre Peterborough.
His course tutor David Cameron said: "The Outstanding Achievement Award is given to students who have overcome particularly difficult challenges and have shown exemplary commitment and effort into achieving their studies.
"Ashley combined his studies with full-time employment and also voluntary work at the Peterborough Sea Cadets. He was nominated in recognition of the outstanding progress that he has made and his never-ending persistence and determination to succeed. He has faced many challenges on his journey but now stands poised to begin a degree course. We wish him well with his future studies."
Ashley was keen to talk to Mr Rickwood about career opportunities in the IT sector and enjoyed a tour around the headquarters which opened two years ago.
He said: "I want to be a computer technician, working with databases. I've worked hard to gain my qualifications and I'd really like to put them to good use."
