Fatboy Challenge raises £370 for the NSPCC

Slimming effort boosts funds for BGL Group's corporate charity partner

Immediate release: 28 May 2009

BGL Group employees have been shaping up for summer shedding pounds to raise pounds for a good cause – £370 in fact, for the NSPCC, BGL Group's corporate charity partner.

When director Andy Bord decided to slim down for summer he thought it was only fair to take his colleagues along for the ride at Peterborough-based BGL Group, one of the UK's largest privately-owned personal lines insurance intermediaries.

Andy, who heads up the division incorporating all of BGL Group's own insurance brands, set up the Fatboy Challenge for himself and 13 colleagues based at Pegasus House, Bakewell Road, Orton Southgate.

The challenge ran for three months. It began with a weigh-in at head office and the slimmers were challenged to lose a percentage of their body weight – 10% if they weighed over 12 stone, and 7.5% if they weighed under 12 stone.

Colleagues included David Lundholm, Director of Acquisitions for BGL Group, David Thompson, Managing Director for Fusion Contact Centre Services – the call centre division of BGL Group, Matthew Gledhill, Marketing Director for Junction, the affinity partnerships specialist division, Alan Dormand, Alex Stokes, Amanda Garratt, Andy Lewis, Daniel Evans, Iain Malthouse, Nainesh Shah, Natasha Glasgow, Paul Hornsby and Sophie Levings. They all chose their own weight-loss method ranging from well-known diets to simple healthy eating and managed to lose a massive 166lbs (almost 12 stone) between them over the three month period.

They paid £10 each to join at the start and had a monthly weigh-in with a £10 fine payable if they didn't achieve their targeted weight loss. They raised £185 for the NSPCC which was then match-funded by the BGL Group's charity fund.

Andy Bord's PA Alex Stokes was the top slimmer achieving an impressive 12.4% body weight loss after shedding almost two stone. Andy Lewis, Senior Manager for Business Operations in Fusion, came second achieving a weight loss of 8.7%.

Andy Bord said: "It was a great fundraiser. There's nothing like a healthy bit of competition between colleagues to inspire weight loss. Everyone did really well, they're feeling much better for shedding a few pounds and we raised £370 for the NSPCC in the process – a good result all around!"

This latest fundraiser brings BGL Group's total raised for the NSPCC so far to £67,800 – a brilliant achievement which is largely down to the hard work and commitment of employees who nominated the NSPCC as their corporate charity partner just over a year ago.
