BGL Group Donates £6000 to Support Victims of Burglary
Immediate release: 20 January 2010
Major Peterborough employer, the BGL Group, today announced its £6,000 support of The Bobby Scheme, a local charity to support victims of burglary in Cambridgeshire. The Bobby Scheme funds three 'Bobbies' to make home visits to the over 60s, offering support and fitting of security equipment in a bid to avoid the recurrence of a break-in.
The BGL Group is backing the charity as part of its commitment to support good causes local to its sites in Peterborough, Coventry and the North East. This is in addition to the company's fundraising target of £100,000 for its corporate charity partner, the NSPCC, by March 2010.
BGL's contribution will fund visits to 50 homes in Peterborough – around a year's activity. Over seven years the Bobby Scheme has helped more than 13,000 people, many of whom are over 80 and live alone. The repeat burglary rate for those who have been helped by the scheme is less than 4 per cent against the national average of 14 per cent.
Jeremy Moll, chairman of the BGL Group's Community Team for the region, said: "As a company that offers people home insurance, there is an obvious link for BGL to support such a worthwhile scheme. Burglary is a traumatic experience for anyone, but older people can be more vulnerable, so this kind of scheme is invaluable in offering support, reassurance, and most importantly, ways to help minimise the risk of future break-ins."
Liz Damazer of the Bobby Scheme said: "We would like to thank BGL for its generous donation. It will make a huge difference to people who have been the unfortunate victims of a break-in. Burglary is sadly the biggest crime threat in Peterborough, so there is always high demand for our three Bobbies."
