BGL footballers raise £2,240 for NSPCC
Immediate release: 30 June 2009
Football fanatics from major local employer the BGL Group have been making money while the sun shines. They've really entered into the team spirit with a Soccer Sixes Knockout Competition raising £2,240 for BGL's corporate charity partner, the NSPCC.
The 11 teams, each with squads of up to 10 players, were made up from around the business's Peterborough sites including the head office at Bakewell Road, Orton Southgate; Fusion Contact Centre Services in Bretton; the distribution centre at Tresham Road, and the IT Headquarters at Park House.
The event took place on football pitches generously provided free of charge at the Bushfield Sports Centre, Orton Southgate, for the charity fundraiser.
In a hard fought competition amongst the nine men's teams, IT were declared outright winners. And, in the big Ladies' Challenge, Pegasus Ladies emerged triumphant, beating Fusion Ladies by six goals to nil.
The money was raised through donations and sponsorship from colleagues, family and friends and a £500 donation from BGL.
Organiser Nik Titman, an online report analyst in Financial Management and Recovery at Fusion Contact Centre, Bretton, said: "Thanks go to the Bushfield Sports Centre, the referees and sports event organisers Nicholas John Associates, who all waived their fees for the event. Thanks also go to Alan Dormand and Daniel Bird for their assistance, and especially to Derek Vernum, President of Northamptonshire Football Association, who presented the trophy to the winning team. Everyone put a lot of training in for the event and it paid off. We had a great day. Thanks to everyone who got involved or supported us in any way."
The event was deemed such a huge success that the organisers are now looking at arranging an even bigger and better version – between all of BGL's UK sites on August Bank Holiday weekend . If it goes ahead, that will see teams competing from all four of the Fusion Contact Centre Services UK sites in Coventry, Peterlee and Sunderland plus all of the Peterborough sites.
