BGL brings £50,000 boost for local causes

Immediate release: 28 June 2010

Local causes in Peterborough, Coventry and the north east have been given a major helping hand thanks to funding support from Peterborough-based BGL Group.

Over the last year, nearly £50,000 has been raised by the company and donated to more than 70 charities, community groups and sporting organisations, all local to BGL's main sites in Peterborough, Coventry, Peterlee and Sunderland. Donations have ranged from £50 for a pre-school club to £7,000 for community sport through Peterborough United Football Club.

All of the projects have been nominated by BGL's Regional Community Teams who are actively involved with fundraising activities and also encourage their work colleagues to offer their skills for a wide range of tasks including decorating, gardening and site clearing.

To date, beneficiaries have included:

  • £6,000 for victim support at Cambridgeshire's 'Bobby' Scheme
  • £6,000 to support homeless and disadvantaged people at St Theresa's Day Centre in Peterborough
  • £2,000 to Coventry's Myton Hospice
  • £400 sponsorship for a Coventry student to join a World Challenge project in Morocco
  • £400 to Castlegreen Community School in Peterlee
  • £400 towards Sunderland's 'Brothers In Arms' memorial wall

Group Chief Executive Peter Winslow said: "As a company we are committed to providing financial help and volunteer support in the areas around our offices in the UK."

"The local causes that our own people have chosen to support show a real concern for – and involvement with – the communities around them. The activities they undertake and the money raised can make a real difference right at the heart of the places where we all work."

The £50,000 raised so far is in addition to the £210,000 raised by BGL for their previous corporate charity the NSPCC, and the ongoing activities that the company has organised for its new corporate charities, Marie Curie Cancer Care and WWF-UK, over the next two years.
