Annual Awards for BGL Group's Valued Employees
Woodland Trust gains £8,000 donation from partygoers

Immediate release: 16 July 2007

On Saturday 14 July The BGL Group held a glamorous awards ceremony and summer ball in a marquee at The Marriott Hotel in Peterborough to recognise the talents of its valued staff.

Attended by 820 staff from throughout the Group's UK operations, the awards event was hosted by Group Chief Executive, Peter Winslow, who personally presented awards to the deserving winners.

All employees were personally invited to the black tie event and asked to make a £10 charity donation with their rsvp to confirm their attendance. They voted to donate the total donation of £8,200, to the Woodland Trust.

This money will be used towards the Trust's extensive projects throughout the region. These include tree planting, preservation of areas of woodland, managing wildlife habitat, new footbridges and school tree planting schemes. The Trust owns, maintains and cares for more than 1,000 woods throughout the UK which are free for the public to visit.

The Woodland Trust's Corporate Partnership Manager Janice Hix said: "Over £8,000 is a fantastic amount to be raised by employees and we're really grateful. Woods are our richest wildlife habitat yet we have less woodland than any of our European neighbours. Support such as this offered by BGL Group employees enables us to both care for the woodland that remains in the UK, and plant many more trees."

Commenting at the 'One Night in Rio' themed event, Peter Winslow said: "Tonight is about celebrating the continuing commitment and hard work of our staff, who have all played a pivotal role in the exceptional growth and success of the BGL Group this year. The awards dinner is a way of saying thank you for everyone's contribution to the Group."

The winners, nominated by their fellow colleagues, were chosen for developing creative ideas, creating a positive work environment, going that extra mile and being genuine, happy and encouraging in the workplace, which are all BGL Group values.

Mr Winslow added: "Our values were at the core of everything we do at the BGL Group. It is only appropriate that we recognise teams and individuals who epitomeise living these values.

The big winners on the night were:

  • Nick Macarte, Allen Seldon, Helen Randle and Paul Hornsby, who won the Just Be... Creative Award for conceiving the idea which has now become BGL Group's newest product – ibuyeco - the new 100 per cent carbon neutral car insurance.
  • Kelly Hindmarsh, Renewals Advisor from Fusion Contact Centre in Sunderland, who won the Just Be... Someone Who Makes a Difference Award, for going the extra mile.
  • Amanda Spencer, Sales Advisor from Fusion in Bretton, Peterborough, won the Just Be... Encouraging Award for actively supporting and recognising people's efforts.
  • Ricky Benson, Sales Team Leader at Fusion in Bretton, Peterborough, who won the Just Be... Genuine Award.

  • The Outstanding Achievement Awards this year went to two employees at the BGL Group's Cape Town site, who joined the company as team leaders and are now managers - Robyn Smith, Sales Completion Manager and Karen van der Merwe, Renewals Manager.

Award winners and their colleagues celebrated their achievements at a lavish three-course dinner, with entertainment from a live band and disco.
