Carbon offsetting
Recycling
In 2007 BGL conducted an audit of its energy usage and resulting carbon footprint. As a result the Group purchased carbon credits to offset its non-reducible CO2 emissions of 5500 tonnes. The credits are invested in various energy projects around the globe including a hydro-power initiative in China.
The Group is working on reducing emissions as part of an ongoing process. One fact that the audit revealed is that in 2006, BGL recycled 56% of its waste by volume, 85% by weight. Recycling such a high proportion of waste has avoided the emission of over 1,000 tonnes of CO2. A new audit will be conducted later in 2008 to enable the Group to offset our 08/09 financial year's emissions.Under the name Green Zone, the BGL Group supports the environment through a number of recycling and energy saving initiatives throughout the business. At each site we have a number of activities underway.
We try to recycle as much as possible and we have green zones located at each of our sites. Items include paper and cardboard, cans, plastic cups and bottles, printer toners/ink cartridges and electronic equipment.
