Charities

Our Charities of the Year

The BGL Group's chosen charities for April 2010 to April 2012 are Marie Curie Cancer Care and WWF-UK, as selected by a company-wide vote by employees. The Group is undertaking a host of activities to raise much-needed funds for these worthy causes. BGL has also provided a donation to WWF-UK which will support a vital project to protect tigers in the wild.

Our previous charity partner was the NSPCC. We smashed our £100,000 target for the charity, mainly through the huge success of our inaugural Charity Trek, where 23 employees raised funds to join an expedition to South Africa. Click here for more details.

The total raised by BGL to help the NSPCC support children who are vulnerable to abuse was £210,000.

Highlights from 2009 include:

  • Charity auctions, quizzes, talent nights, leg waxes, head shaves and much more in aid of the 2010 Cape Town Charity Trek raised £104,000 for the NSPCC
  • A team completing the Three Peaks Challenge raised almost £9,000
  • Various cycle challenges including the Coast2Coast; London to Paris Bike Ride and the Peterborough to York Cycle Ride, raised in excess of £5,000
  • A slimming challenge among a number of the senior management team
  • Themed Buzz Days at all our sites
  • Many individuals and teams across the BGL Group took part in the London Marathon, and various other personal challenges to benefit the NSPCC

Support for local communities

In addition to our Charity of the Year, we support causes in the local communities in which we operate. At each location a staff committee meets monthly and has responsibility for making donations on behalf of the company to local charities and good causes, based on requests from staff and representatives in the local community.

We have formed relationships on a local level with Sue Ryder Care in Peterborough and Myton Hospice in Coventry, as well as supporting many other local causes.

Great Fen Project

The BGL Group is corporate sponsor of the Ramsey Heights Countryside classroom at the Great Fen Project. This is a major habitat restoration project to create a 3,700 hectare wetland between Huntingdon and Peterborough.

Company matching policy

We always support our employees in their fundraising. Any employee participating in a sponsored charity event can apply to have their donations matched by the BGL Group.

Give As You Earn

A Give As You Earn system is in place for staff to donate to their chosen charity via payroll.

Volunteering

We also participate in regular community initiatives close to each of our offices. Recent projects have involved:

  • Helping to transform the Cornerstone Centre in Hillfields, Coventry
  • Gardening and decorating at a Orton Goldhay Community Centre, Peterborough
  • Landscaping the Belmont Allotments in County Durham
  • Gardening and painting at Eyrescroft Primary School in Peterborough
  • Building a 'wise woman's hut' and brush clearing at the Great Fen Project
